In addition to your degree and on-the-job experience, you should have the following skills to be an effective Instructor:

  • Calm and friendly temperament
  • Balance between being a creative and critical thinker
  • Excellent communication, instructional, and mediation skills
  • Knowledge of child development principles and preschool education methods
  • Familiarity with classroom safety
  • Exceptional patience and stamina
  • The ability to be both organized and flexible

DutiesResponsibilities

  • Providing care for children, such as setting schedules and routines, grooming, cleaning rooms and toys.
  • Developing and encouraging age-appropriate learning and socialization to ensure children learn basic skills and concepts, such as communication, manners, sharing, etc.
  • Maintaining a safe workplace by monitoring children for health, behavioral, and emotional issues and reporting concerns to staff and parents.
  • Ensuring children are learning positive behaviors and providing guidance.
  • Preparing children to enter the next level of care for entry into school.
  • Working with children one-on-one or within groups, depending on the subject matter and the child’s needs.
  • Keeping records relating to childcare.
  • Collaborating with staff and parents to help children progress towards educational and behavioral goals.
  • Monitoring children for any emotional or developmental warning signs and notifying staff and their parents.

RequirementsRequirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • More education and experience may be required or preferred
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Must be age 18 or older
  • Additional certifications or training may be beneficial or required
  • Decisiveness, patience, and stamina to chase after, lift, or carry children
  • Ability to pass fingerprinting and background check
  • Exceptional communication, teaching, and people skills
  • Strong understanding of stages of childhood development
  • CPR/First Aid Certified

Nice To HavesWork Experience:

  • Experience in a childcare setting, including working as a teacher assistant or within a childcare environment.
  • Time spent as a professional babysitter, or nanny.
