Description: Job DescriptionThe New York City Department of Transportation’s Art Program (NYC DOT Art) manages all temporary and permanent public art projects on behalf of the agency. The unit works on many priority projects, some of which include:Support execution of the NYC DOT Art Program, a temporary public art program to install commissioned and existing artworks on NYC DOT properties in partnership with local community-based organizations and artists; andManaging temporary art projects throughout all project phases (selection, design, fabrication, installation, and removal; andManaging and maintaining permanent public art projects on NYC DOT properties in conjunction with the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art Program mandated by law; andPlanning, execution, and management of art installations for events such as Summer Streets, an annual car-free event providing space for healthy recreation that encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation held at the end of summer, and Car-Free Earth Day, an annual car-free event focused on environmentalism and sustainability held in April; andDeveloping and circulating open calls for artists and artworks to organizations and artists, along with the management of the submission database and leading the selection process; andConvening meetings with partners and artists, and interfacing with internal NYC DOT operating units; andEditing press releases submitted by partner organizations and preparing content for press inquiries of NYC DOT Art commissioned installations in collaboration with NYC DOT Press Office; andDeveloping descriptive signage for temporary art projects working with NYC DOT’s Creative Services team; andMarketing projects using social media (Instagram and Flickr), developing content for NYC DOT Art’s e-newsletter, and updating the NYC DOT Art webpage; andPlanning and management of outreach and marketing events for the program; andPhoto-documentation of temporary and permanent art projects; andManaging inventory of NYC DOT Art’s temporary and permanent installations; andPreparing and delivering presentations to internal operating units, executive staff, and external partners.The New York City Department of Transportation’s Art Program (NYC DOT Art) partners with community-based, nonprofit organizations and professional artists to present temporary public art on NYC DOT property throughout the five boroughs for up to eleven months. Artists transform streets with colorful murals, dynamic projections, and eye-catching sculptures. Sidewalks, fences, triangles, medians, bridges, jersey barriers, step streets, public plazas and pedestrianized spaces serve as canvases and foundations for temporary art. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above.
