Be sure to check out our to learn more about our and our .General Definition of Work:This position is responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of students and for completing health-related tasks. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) may provide medical support to students either on an individual basis or on a wider scope. Support provided on an individual basis may be in the classroom to students CNAs will be providing para-professional, clerical, and human support in assisting the classroom teacher in the management and instruction of students with varied needs and abilities. CNAs may also provide medical support and assist with the well-being for all students within a location. All work is performed under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher, school administrator, School Health Services Coordinator and/or school nurse as applicable and is contingent on the location’s and/or students’ needs.Essential Functions:

  • Informs administrators and school personnel about students with health issues, in compliance with medical privacy regulations;
  • Administers medication to appropriate students, with parental permission and a doctor’s order for prescription medication;
  • Keeps medication permission forms on file, secures medications and documents receiving and returning medications including controlled substances; appropriately documents medication administration;
  • Supplies and adequately maintains the school clinic, as needed;
  • Performs medical procedures as prescribed by a physician and has trained to do so;
  • Documents clinic services to students and enters health information in the Student Information System;
  • Assists sick or injured students and staff, performs routine and emergency first aid as trained;
  • Calls parents of ill students; assists ill students as needed until a parent arrives;
  • Reports cases of infectious illnesses to School Health Services Coordinator and follows guidance to reduce spread;
  • Refers health concerns as appropriate to School Health Services Coordinator and/or school administrator;
  • Reports cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services, administrator, and School Health Services Coordinator;
  • Advises administrators on appropriate interventions to meet student needs;
  • Ensures compliance with all laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and obtains the written consent of parent/guardian to share information except as defined by the school division as need-to-know;
  • Serves as a member of the School Crisis Team;
  • Assists in special activities, fire drills, and field trips;
  • Performs clerical duties including typing, filing, and copying related to school health records maintenance functions or as directed by special education teacher;
  • Assists in enforcing rules and discipline; performs student supervision duties as required;
  • Assists students with special needs with personal comfort and movement;
  • Trains in prescribed medical procedures for students to include, but not limited to, such tasks as tube feeding, monitoring, and medication administration;
  • Tcords vital signs as warranted; when assigned to one student, may monitor neurological and respiratory status and reports to the school nurse when rates are outside of the identified normal range;
  • Follows the Individual Health Care Plan (IHP) for a student and recognizes and responds appropriately to emergencies as trained by the school nurse;
  • Recognizes when student is having a medical emergency, such as a seizure, and takes appropriate action to include first aid measures and the administration of emergency medication as trained by the school nurse; follows all written emergency care plans for students including anaphylaxis, asthma, seizure and diabetes;
  • Assists with toileting, feeding, and positioning of students; may perform functions related to hygiene and comfort for assigned students;
  • Prepares, cleans, and maintains classroom, bathroom, and other areas for medical or sanitary duties;
  • Assists with medical related duties, i.e., catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy and ileostomy as trained, both in the school setting and while transporting to and from school, as needed;
  • Assists special education teacher in instructional activities and carrying out behavior management programs;
  • Assists in physical movement of students from one learning environment to another;
  • Performs such duties as attendance, recording and collection of lunch monies as directed by classroom teacher or school administrator;
  • Assists in maintenance of student’s records, under the supervision of the school administrator;
  • Participates in team meetings; may assist with carry-over of related services, i.e., Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, and Vision.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Demonstrates sound judgment. Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Basic computer and clerical skills. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality. An ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students with special needs and/or disabilities. Willing to learn specialized instructional/management techniques employed with students with disabilities. Functional knowledge of current health issues as they relate to school-age children; general knowledge of student behavior management practices, procedures, and techniques; general knowledge of school system rules and procedures for classroom, halls, cafeteria, library, and transportation; ability to guide, direct, teach, and counsel students; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.Education and Experience:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Minimum one (1) year experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Experience in the care of children with special health needs preferred. Hold appropriate credentials as a Certified Nursing Assistant and maintains certification in First Aid, CPR and medication administration.Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 80 pounds, and other physical activities necessary for the movement and comfort of students with disabilities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Regular movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Personal hygiene of students with disabilities in changing catheters, diapers and clothing may be required. Training and immunization against blood borne pathogens is necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Occasional attendance at parent conferences, building-level meetings and division- wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with children with special needs/disabilities to provide classroom management and learning environment support may be required. Regular contact with other staff members, parents and medical professionals may be required. Contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy. Contact with children requires considerable empathy and understanding of students.
