Description: The Knopf Doubleday Creative Services department seeks an Art Director to lead a team of three designers in the creation of marketing assets ranging from online advertising, online promotion/social media assets (static/animated/video), lifestyle photography, point-of-sale materials, and promotional merchandise. Reporting to the VP & Director, Creative Marketing & Advertising Services, this experienced leader in art direction will be day one ready to work alongside a team of marketers, editors, creatives, and publishing professionals to position our books here at KDPG.The Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group is a storied leader in commercial and literary publishing, comprised of the Knopf, Doubleday, Pantheon, Schocken, Vintage, Anchor, and Everyman’s Library imprints. It is the home to some of the most iconic authors in the world, including Nobel Laureates Kazuo Ishiguro, Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, and Elie Wiesel; Prize-winners Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Margaret Atwood, Robert Caro, Joan Didion, Yaa Gyasi, Jhumpa Lahiri, Cormac McCarthy, Michael Ondaatje, Tommy Orange, Art Spiegelman, Anne Tyler, and Colson Whitehead; and global bestsellers Dan Brown, Bonnie Garmus, John Grisham, Erin Morgenstern, and Jo Nesbo.The Art Director will work closely with marketers across the division to ensure that our advertising and promotional materials reflect a modern aesthetic and present our books and authors in the most dynamic and persuasive manner. They should stay abreast of marketing trends in books specifically but also across all media to ensure that our ads have the greatest chance of grabbing consumers’ attention. They are attuned to data-driven decision making and driven by marrying performance with artistic creativity. Multi-tasking and problem-solving are second nature to them, and they thrive on working on multiple projects simultaneously. The Art Director will take on projects themselves, assign tasks to the team of designers, and manage a freelancer budget to ensure a consistent high level of quality across the group’s creative assets. They will have the ability to think strategically about how our assets represent our books, authors, imprints, and the company as a whole.Specific responsibilities include:

  • Oversee Asset Design: Direct designers in a way that communicates the campaign’s goals clearly. Work through revisions to present the best possible version of ads and other collateral to marketers. The Art Director will take the lead in designing some assets.
  • Project Management: Monitor the group’s Basecamp project management tool to ensure that projects are completed on time and according to specifications. Also oversee freelancer budget and contracts
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with marketers to help create and support a strong vision and voice for the division’s social media platforms with the ability to think through how best to harness AI and other technology to maximize return

Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in graphic design working in the following industries: book or magazine publishing, advertising agency, in-house advertising team, or marketing firm.
  • A minimum of two years leading a team of designers, preferably in a marketing or advertising environment. Book publishing design management experience is a plus
  • A minimum of three years of print advertising and print promotional material experience is preferred
  • Refined aesthetic sense that will align with our list of literary fiction and nonfiction
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
  • Ability to manage multiple campaigns at different stages of execution, with strong organizational skills and a keen attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Canva, After Effects, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player with the ability to collaborate closely with the Knopf Doubleday marketing team

The salary range for this position is $100,000-$115,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.This hybrid position has occasional in-office responsibilities, including but not limited to in-office meetings, author visits or events, and daily ad hoc administrative projects.
