Description: Job DescriptionTitle: Folk Arts CoordinatorLocation: Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts, SLCWage Range: $25.33-$32 per hourPosition SummaryThe Utah Division of Arts & Museums (UA&M) seeks an experienced and knowledgeable individual to join our team as Folk Arts Coordinator. The individual in this position is responsible for partnering with Utah’s cultural communities to support, preserve, and celebrate traditional music, dance, craft, visual arts, foodways, and lifeways throughout the state.Essential Duties
- Plans, creates, and implements an annual plan for the folk arts program, in conjunction with UA&M’s strategic initiatives.
- Promote and preserve the traditions of Utah’s folk artists, culture bearers, and community scholars through fieldwork, relationship-building, and partnerships. Furnishes the public with information on the objectives and activities of the folk and traditional arts program.
- Provide content advice and technical assistance to artists, organizations, and communities in developing folk and traditional arts programming
- Identify and support folk and traditional artists while promoting best practices in folk arts and folk arts education programming.
- Recruit & provide technical assistance to Utah folk & traditional artists participating in grant-making opportunities, conferences, & activities
- Coordinate with UA&M staff to develop and implement museum exhibitions, including object selection, display, interpretation, and development of lesson plans.
- Collaborate with UA&M colleagues to develop and implement public programs that include folk arts and/or folk and traditional artists.
- Develop and implement professional development workshops and hands-on folk arts education activities.
- Work with the UA&M Collections Team & Art Acquisition Council to incorporate folk and traditional arts acquisitions into the State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection.
- Manages budget, contracts, and payments for the Folk Arts program. Writes, reviews and or negotiates contracts or agreements.
- Collaborate with the Salt Lake City Arts Council to produce and present folk and traditional arts programming, such as the Living Traditions Festival and Mondays in the Park.
- Maintain the Folk Arts Program database, archive, and related digital exhibitions and media.
- Research, write, and assist with grants and reporting for the Folk Arts Program.
- Represent UA&M at local, state, regional, and national Folk Arts convenings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills.
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining collaborative partnerships.
- Ability to work well as a team member and independently.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience creating and implementing professional development activities utilizing folk and traditional artists in various settings.
- Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize work, and meet critical deadlines.
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Willing and able to travel.
Preference may be given to candidates with the following:A minimum of 3 years of experience working within the field of Folk & Traditional Arts.Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Folklore, Ethnomusicology, or a related field OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.About Us:The Utah Arts & Museums team is a passionate and talented group of professionals dedicated to championing cultural experiences by investing in arts and museums, offering professional development, facilitating connections, and providing direct services. - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work. Must be able to carry 30 lbs.
- Ability to obtain a valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
