Our deep-rooted commitment to excellence, collaboration, integrity, diversity and inclusion creates exceptional educational opportunities which prepare students for success in a global society.Essential functions (job duties):The Associate Director, Marketing and Communications leads all marketing, communications, creative, and public relations activity for the Law School, including strategy development and execution, content creation, program/service/academic/event marketing and promotion, project management, event management, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to advance the Law School’s mission and strengthen its brand. The Associate Director will lead, supervise, and strategically direct the Law School Marketing and Communications Office; manage, engage in, and control day-to-day office activities; create, direct, implement, and ensure quality control of marketing, public relations, communications, advertising, social media, and media relations content and efforts for the Law School; and facilitate a collaborative working environment with Law School colleagues, WSU administrators, faculty, staff, students, volunteers and law school constituents.This position will report to the Dean of the Law School and will work closely with the Senior Director, Administration and Accreditation, the faculty Associate Deans, and other Law School leadership in advancing marketing and communications and implementing the Dean’s vision. The position will have a dotted line relationship to the University’s Assistant Vice President, Strategic Operations and Academic Communications.Lead Marketing and Communication: Lead all marketing and communications strategy and activities for the Law School. Establish and ensure brand voice and visuals, develop, and execute messaging that aligns with organizational mission, vision, and goals; serve as chief storyteller for the Law School and create compelling content about programs, faculty, students, staff, alumni, partners, initiatives, and achievements. Lead public relations efforts, increasing the visibility of the Law School, its services, students, alumni, faculty, and overall core values. Oversee, engage in, and coordinate all marketing and communication budget activities, including planning, directing, and overseeing the budget preparation process, long and short-term planning, cost projections, and budget estimates. Supervise full-time and part-time support personnel. Hire, manage, evaluate, and provide training for assigned personnel. Make work assignments and oversee workflow to improve operational efficiencies. Be willing to step in and assist subordinates to ensure deadlines are met.Content Creation + Creativity: Personally create communications in various media for the Law School which reflect the brand and competitively position the college. Responsible for content creation and content organization in all brochures, bulletins, event invitations, newsletters, magazines, postcards, HTML targeted emails, speeches, letters, memos, and other publications for dissemination to both internal and external audiences.Online + Social Media: Establish, advance, executive, and oversee an online presence and strategy for the Law School, including messaging, website design and maintenance, and all social media presence and activity.Marketing + Promotional: Review, edit, and update existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness, cross-selling implications, and adherence to brand guidelines. Make changes to increase impact.Leadership + Collaboration: Coordinate communications projects with vendors and contractors for the development and production of promotional materials, web site production and other collateral. Work collaboratively with University Marketing and Communications, Academic Affairs Communications, and other central units, and with internal Law School offices, to achieve Law School and University goals. Manage, engage in, and control day-to-day office activities to create a collaborative working environment with WSU administrators, faculty, staff, students, and volunteers.Qualifications:Education: Bachelor’s degreeBachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications or marketing.Master’s degree in marketing or communications and/or JD preferred.Experience; Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)Minimum of five years of strategic marketing, communications, and management experience, preferably in higher education and ideally in a law school.Experience in project/budget management.Proven track record in developing and executing marketing/communications strategy and content for multiple audiences and stakeholders.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesOrganizational Leadership: Ability to plan and set strategic direction for marketing and communication efforts and the ability to work and lead a variety of people and situations. Ability to step in and get priorities done on time, shifting priorities as needed. Need to be able to articulate the mission of Wayne State University and the Law School to many constituencies.Writing and Content Creation Skills: Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading abilities needed, with the capacity to create engaging and impactful content across a wide range of materials, including digital platforms, print, social media, email campaigns, press releases, and executive communications. Ability to create persuasive and compelling content quickly as needed and to translate and distill sophisticated concepts for
maximal impact. Outstanding command of written language and attention to detail. Facility with graphic design.Management: Ability to train, motivate and develop staff and ensure a culture of accountability. Ability to set and implement a self-directed agenda. Ability to delegate effectively, including monitoring and feedback on delegated tasks to ensure appropriate and timely completion. Consensus building skills. Excellent ability to prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of management in Client organizations throughout the University.Planning/Organizing: Ability to prioritize and plan work activities and develop strategies to achieve organizational goals and develop realistic action plans. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, often under tight deadlines. Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and possess top level business management, interpersonal, presentation and facilitation skills.Problem-solving: Ability to identify and resolve problems, develop alternative approaches and meets challenges with resourcefulness.Customer Service and Collaboration: Responds to customer needs and practices follow-up to ensure customer needs are met. Ability to handle constructive feedback from various entities, engage in problem solving, and communicate regularly with customers about timelines and satisfaction with progress on projects. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders having different priorities and perspectives. Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.Communications: Ability to interact and articulate sensitively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators in a multicultural and diverse community. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
