Description: The Office of University Communications at the University of Virginia seeks a front-end developer who is passionate about merging the art of web design and programming to showcase UVA Today news stories and multimedia, as well as other marketing content, on our websites and mass email platforms.The successful candidate will be able to help curate a range of varied written and visual news content daily and create beautiful, accessible and frequently interactive web pages and emails that engage our audiences. The front-end developer will be part of a four-person Digital Development and User Experience team and will collaborate with a large, multi-functional group of professionals including news writers, editors, photographers, video producers, designers and marketers, all supporting University Communications’ goal to position UVA as a model of excellence in public higher education. University Communications’ aim is to inform and inspire our audiences, ensuring the University’s impact is widely recognized in our broad UVA community, across the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.Key Responsibilities:

• Develop visually compelling and interactive web pages and daily emails for UVA Today, the University’s news and content platform.
• Create and maintain online interactive and multimedia content, including photo galleries, slide shows, animations, videos, and other embedded digital elements .
• Ensure content meets digital accessibility standards and is responsive across multiple browsers and mobile devices.
• Contribute to improvements in the day-to-day functionality of UVA Today’s website and emails, including best practices for search engine optimization.
• Play an integral role in UVA Today website and email design.
• Contribute to other Digital Development and User Experience team projects, including refresh projects and quality assurance testing for a range of the websites maintained by University Communications.
• Perform other tasks as assigned, including improvements to our onsite search tool and calendar function.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in web design, web development, computer science or a related discipline
• Minimum of one year of experience, preferably in a fast-paced, content-driven environment; two or more years strongly preferred.
• Experience managing websites and website design projects
• Focused attention to detail, ability to work independently, capability for managing multiple projects simultaneously, and driven to pursue continuous skill growth
• Ability to adapt to new digital tools and emerging technologies and digital design trends

• UX/UI design
• HTML5
• HTML Email Development
• CSS3
• JavaScript
• A JavaScript Library such as jQuery or Tailwind
• SVG Animations
• Working with a CMS
• Adobe Suite
• Microsoft Suite
• Testing/Debugging
• Responsive Development

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing mass email programs
• Knowledge of digital accessibility WCAG AA requirements
• Experience with SEO best practices
