Description: Advertised Job SummaryThe Law Enforcement Officer I/Public Safety Officer provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of South Carolina Community and property. These are certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws 23-6-430, empowered with full arrest and police authority state wide. They enforce state laws and University rules and regulations.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and ExperienceRequires accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and no prior work experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials
Preferred QualificationsOne year experience in public safety/law enforcement, a related field, or comparable educational experience.
Knowledge/Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role. Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures. Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence. Knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel. Knowledge of the laws of South Carolina, and policies of the University. Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipmentJob DutiesJob DutyPatrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law and Policy / apprehends and arrests violators. Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Keeps records and makes reports regarding all activities. Assists with crime prevention measures and programs. Conducts preliminary investigations

Job DutyIssues warnings and citations (criminal and internal disciplinary) to violators. Investigates traffic accidents. Directs traffic and controls crowds.

Job DutyTestifies in court and other criminal and administrative proceedings to include prosecution of defendants in magistrate’s court. Process and documents crime scenes. Conducts surveillance and performs undercover assignments. Collects and presents evidence to obtain and execute search and/or arrest warrants. Assists with dispatch operations
