Description: Summary of Responsibilities:The IAIA Samuel R. Peterson Chair of Native American Art History (Chair) will lead the development and implementation of the Native American Native Art History BA degree program and the continuation of the Native American Art History Certificate and Minor programs. The Chair will supervise the Native American Art History faculty and teach 2 (two) Native American Art History, Art Criticism, Art Theory and/or Visual Cultures courses per semester. In addition, the chair will lead the Native American Art History curriculum, program development, and assessment of and support IAIA’s mission, vision, and core values.Essential Position Functions:· Lead the IAIA Native American Art History Certificate and Minor programs· Lead the development of an IAIA Native American Art History BA,· Lead implementation of the IAIA Native American Art History BA,· Lead the Native American Art History curriculum and program development,· Lead departmental assessments and participate in institutional assessments,· Write, manage, and administrate departmental grants and budgets,· Teach 2 (two) Native American Art History, Art Criticism, Art Theory and/or Visual Cultures courses per semester,· Supervising of Native American Art History faculty and adjuncts,· Lead Native American Art History faculty hiring and development,· Maintain ongoing professional practices and recognized standing in the profession,· Maintain adequate facilities for the program and the delivery of required courses,· Participate in educational and professional activities within the Institute,· Provide student advisement in Native American Art History degree programs/ certificate and career opportunities,· Take part in on-going committee work assignments and participate in assigned committee work and meetings,· Keep the appropriate number of office hours per week,· Other duties as assigned.RequirementsRequired Education:Requires a Masters in Art History or related field with a focus in Native American Art History and recent/ relevant teaching experience at the college level. Must demonstrate a high level of professional achievement and a record of publications in Art History. Experience with American Indian and Alaska Native artists and cultures preferred. Ph.D. in Art History/ Native American Art History preferred.Required Competencies (Skills/Knowledge, Experience and Abilities)· Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated ability to manage an academic department budget,· Comprehensive knowledge and ability to manage departmental faculty, adjuncts, and affiliated staff,· Comprehensive knowledge of art historical trends and theoretical issues in all fields of Native American art and Art History,· Experience in teaching Native American students· Knowledge and experience in best practices for Native American Art History education,· Expertise and knowledge of all relevant teaching software and technology,· Excellent and proven communication and problem-solving skills,· Excellent written and spoken communication skills,· Experience with interacting and working successfully with faculty, students, and institutional staff,· Demonstrated ability and willingness to adapt teaching style towards learning outcomes,· Demonstrated ability and willingness to support program goals and objectives and take a leadership role,· Demonstrated ability to guide and facilitate faculty and students through knowledge and skill building,· Demonstrated sensitivity towards Native Americans and an ability to motivate and teach students from diverse ethnic backgrounds,· Demonstrated commitment to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the classroom in a shared governance environment,· The Chair must adhere to appropriate professional academic standards of conduct and ethics, including:o confidentialityo integrity, and honestyo compliance with directiveso cooperate and work respectfully with others· Ability to adapt quickly and effectively to changes in the work environment,· Ability and skill to demonstrate a pleasant, courteous, and professional demeanor and presence at all times,· Ability to be a self-starter; highly self-motivated to improve programs,· Ability to respond to requests in a timely manner,· Ability to work with moderate supervision, to begin assignments independently (or as assigned), and to bring assignments to a conclusion on a timely basis,· Demonstrate compliance with all applicable and essential IAIA policies, processes, and/or procedures,· Ability to perform other duties as assigned.WORKING CONDITIONS· Conditions are primarily in office, college campus/ classroom spaces,· Occasional travel by car, plane… to native communities, conferences, museums, cultural centers, and research facilities,· Must be able to move and/or maneuver items weighing up to 30 lbs,· Management has the right to revise this job description at any time, with or without notice,· Performance evaluation will include assessment of job performance and results as described herein,· Must have a clean driving record to be insurable and use IAIA vehicles,· This job description does not list all the duties of this position,· This job description is not an employment contract.
