A Substitute Teacher is to support the delivery of instruction of the students of West Ada School District by replacing teachers and/or paraprofessionals in the classrooms when they are not available.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
To support student learning by providing instruction and classroom management in the absence of the regular teacher and/or paraprofessional.ESSENTIAL DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:· Report to the building secretary at the beginning of the day.· Review the information in the sub folders provided by the office and absent teacher for all plans and schedules to be followed during the instructional day.· Maintain as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.· Instruct students by following the plan left by the absent teacher. This instruction may include lecture, demonstration, discussions, projects, practical activities, experiments, assignments and other methods.· Consult as appropriate with the building principal administration or department head before initiating any instruction or other procedures not specified in the absent teacher’s plans.· Supervise students and assist in upholding and enforcing all policies, procedures and rules of the district and school.· Follow the absent teacher’s rules for classroom management and discipline, observe student conduct and maintain classroom order and discipline, address observed inappropriate student conduct both within the classroom and in other school settings and confer with the administration in order to resolve inappropriate student conduct.· Perform all other duties that are the responsibility of the absent teacher or paraprofessional, including, but not limited to, recess and lunch duty.· Learn and effectively use classroom technology tools, including logging in to all necessary district systems and platforms, to support instructional activities and student engagement during the substitute teaching period.· Follows all policies, procedures and rules of the district and school.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:

  • Basic instructional methods and strategies appropriate for a K-12 classroom environment.
  • Classroom management techniques and behavior reinforcement strategies.
  • School and district policies, procedures, and routines.
  • Student safety protocols and supervision practices.
  • Basic functions of classroom technology and instructional tools.
  • Effective communication principles and professional conduct in educational settings.

Ability to:

  • Follow and implement lesson plans provided by the absent teacher with fidelity.
  • Maintain classroom order and ensure a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Uphold school-wide policies and expectations consistently.
  • Adapt to a variety of grade levels, subjects, and student needs.
  • Supervise students in various settings, including classrooms, hallways, recess, and lunch periods.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Exercise sound judgment, flexibility, and professionalism in unfamiliar situations.
  • Log in to and navigate district technology systems to support student learning.
  • Follow daily schedules and routines as outlined in substitute folders.
  • Collaborate with school staff when clarification or support is needed.
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Operate and use modern office equipment, including computers and appropriate software.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONSAny equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older for classified/para positions and elementary certified teaching positions, and 21 years of age or older for secondary certified teaching positions.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • If you have had no teaching experience in a classroom, you must purchase and complete an online training course as assigned by the Substitute Placement Office.
  • Must attend the West Ada Substitute Orientation Class.

To maintain this position, substitute teachers must accept a minimum of one substitute assignment per month.ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person;
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work and assessments, prepare and review documents, and organize documents and materials;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform repetitive hand/wrist/arm motions and to operate a computer and office equipment;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work in an office environment, lifting or moving objects that weigh up to 25 lbs.;
  • Job tasks require, with or without reasonable accommodation, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, typing, and grasping.

Regular attendance is an essential function of this job.
